Johnson Teigen attorneys speak on Medicaid trusts
On July 23, 2020, Attorneys Mark Johnson and Meghan Teigen spoke about irrevocable trusts to a national audience of other elder law attorneys. The Lunch and Learn webinar presentation—Five-Year Trusts: Benefits, Pitfalls and Solutions—was sponsored by the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Attorneys Johnson and Teigen joined two other attorney panelists in sharing fundamentals of this type of trust with more than 200 attorneys from around the country. Such trusts, also known as Medicaid asset protection trusts or 5-year trusts, are one of several tools available to plan for preserving assets in conjunction with long-term care planning and estate planning. As Attorneys Johnson and Teigen emphasized in their remarks, advice and options about this type of trust must be customized to each client, to make sure the trust is suitable for a particular client, their assets, and their goals.
