Caring for the Holidays

The attorneys and staff of Johnson Teigen, LLC wish you all the best for the holiday season and the new year!  We value our relationships with our clients and professional colleagues, and we look forward to our continued work together.

Caregiving and caregiver support are significant parts of the elder law and special needs law practice at Johnson Teigen.  Finding and arranging caregiving can be a significant challenge, so here are some resources to lighten to workload.

  • Family Caregiver Alliance has resources for those providing care and those needing care, including a tool to find state-specific services. (caregiver.org)
  • AARP has numerous resources, including state-specific guides, for all aspects of caregiving.  Furthermore, AARP supports caregiving tax credits and paid leave in upcoming state legislative proposals.
  • Whenever you hire an individual to provide care, even a family member, a written agreement is ideal.  An agreement can state the tasks involved, the amount of pay, and various tax and insurance aspects of the arrangement.  And, if the individual receiving care may need Medicaid long-term care benefits in the future, it is all the more important to have an agreement in writing, with certain additional requirements, so that Medicaid will honor the agreement as payment for services instead of a gift that could be penalized.

The attorneys at Johnson Teigen, LLC can advise you about agreements for care, services, and room and board, especially when provided by family members.  Contact us to discuss these and other topics for long-term care.
